The Person Behind @Elmo
I interviewed Christina Vittas, Social Media Manager for Sesame Workshop and the online voice of Elmo.

Did you read those three tweets in Elmoโs signature high-pitched voice? If so, that means Christina Vittas, the online voice of @Elmo, did her job.
As social managers, we speak on behalf of a brand. We have guidelines that outline the brandโs voice and toneโand we, for the most part, stick to them.
But what happens when, as a social manager, you speak on behalf of a puppet? And not just any puppet, but arguably the most beloved, iconic, and funny puppet in history?
Todayโs interview is with Christina Vittas, social media manager for Sesame Workshop and the online voice of @Elmo. The accounts for the 3.5-year-oldย red monster have over one million total followersโracking up engagement numbers most non-puppets would dream of. What Christina has been able to do with Elmoโs accounts is remarkable. I, an adult, love following along for Elmoโs wholesome Tweets, silly videos, and amusing beef with Rocco.
In this interview, Christina and I talk about what she does to โget into characterโ, how she curates Elmoโs calendar, and why she loves working in social media.
Karten: First, can you tell me about your current role and anyย previousย social (or not!) rolesย you'veย had?ย
Christina Vittas:โฏI am a social media manager for Sesame Workshop, the global impact nonprofit behind Sesame Street and so much more. My teamย is responsible forย managing accounts like @SesameStreet, @SesameWorkshop, and the Sesame Street Muppet accounts on all major platforms.
Sesame Workshop was my first internship and first job after graduating college. Since joining in November 2020, my role has evolved from Marketing Coordinator to Audience Development Coordinator to Social Media Specialist and now Social Media Manager. In this position, I continue to support our Sesame Street andย Sesameย Workshop channels,ย as well as manage Elmoโs social media.โฏย
RK: I'dย love to focus specifically on the work you do on Elmo's accounts.ย I'veย always said it must be so interesting running the social for a celebrity, and that's...basically whatย you do. Can you summarize the social strategy for Elmo?ย
CV: Itโsย truly an honor to manage Elmoโs socials. My little red friend keeps meย very busy, but I love what I do and who I do it for. Elmoโs social media is managed from his perspective and one of the most important parts of this job isย maintainingย the fourth wall. After all, in my heart andย inย many othersโ,ย Elmo is aย real 3.5-year-oldย monster who lives on Sesame Street with friends, fairies, and beyond!
We look at Elmoโs social presence in a fewย different ways;ย itโsย a mechanism to stay top-of-mind with fans,ย itโsย how we can meet people where they already are, andย itโsย one of the most direct ways to spread joy, love, and laughs. When curating his calendar, I look to keep a healthy balance of heartfelt, funny, and educational content. And what I learnย time and time againย is that we could all use a little more Sesame Street in our lives.โฏย
RK: Is there anything you do to get into the spirit of channeling Elmo on social? Do you feel like that side of you is easy to turn on?ย
CV: โฏI love this question because yesโฆsometimes I do need to โchannel Elmo.โ A daily question I ask myself is, โwhat would Elmo do?โ.ย
Ryan Dillon, the puppeteerย behindย Elmo,ย isย in my opinion,ย oneย of the greatest to have ever take on the craftย andย I feel really lucky that I get a front-row seat.ย Iย learn so much from studying his workย and the work of our tremendous writers.ย Iย probably watchย moreย Elmo contentย than a whole preschool classย combined,ย butย Iย am not learning myย ABCs and 123s, Iย am learningย comedy, character traits,ย and so much more that all goes into the work I do.ย I feelย in touchย with my inner-Elmo and am grateful thatย theย joy, curiosity, and spirit of friendshipย that we shareย comesย naturally to me.
I have thought about this a lot, andย I believe we allย have a little bit of our Sesame Street friends in us all. For me, I feel like Elmo, but I love to use my imagination like Ernie, I embrace my family heritage like Rosita, and whenย Iโmย low on sleep, you can find me feeling like Oscar the Grouch. We all can channel our inner Elmo, or Oscar, or Cookie Monsterโitโsย all about finding that side ofย yourself.ย
RK: I feel like this year in particular has been a big one for Elmo on Twitter.ย How would you describe Elmo's voice and personality on that platform? How do you balance being for kids but speaking more to an adult audience on social platforms?ย
CV: I would describeย @Elmoโs voice on Twitter asย funny, inspiring,ย andย relatableโand that isย becauseย Elmoโs voiceย on Sesame Street isย allย ofย those things.ย One of my favorite replies I see from fans is โI read this in Elmoโs voice.โ That to me means I hit my mark.ย
Strategic social media management involvesย figuring out the best combinations ofย how, what, and whenย content should be shared onย platforms.ย But whenย you are working with childrenโs content, there are added steps and layers to think aboutโcan adults connect with this?ย Could this beย adaptedย or re-contextualizedย for socialย audiences? And so on.ย
I do my best to make sure that Elmoโs joy, heart, andย realnessย shines through his content on social media, inย an appropriate way. Sesame Street always has been and always will be made with the mission to help children grow smarter, stronger, and kinder but from my three years working on @Elmo, I have come to realize that adults need a little Elmo in their lives,ย too,ย and social media is a way for that to happen.
RK: How do you decide which cultural conversations make sense for Elmo to partake in? For example, this yearย you'veย commented onย Taylor Swift,ย Spotify Wrapped, and more.ย
โฏCV: Whatever @Elmo does, it alwaysย mustย feel โauthentically Elmo.โ Some questions I ask myself and my teammates are โWhy Elmo?โ,ย โShould Elmo?โ,ย โWhat makes this unique to Elmo?โ and โCan we put a Sesame-spin on this?โ. Byย participatingย in trends and cultural conversations, Elmo can show other parts of his personality and relate to folks near and far from the Sesame Street target audience.ย
Withย Elmoโsย World Wrapped post, we were able to touch on a number of things that make Elmo, Elmo, as well as infuse a curricular topic like belly breathing.ย To me, that is the perfect opportunity to join a cultural conversation. Sometimes,ย itโsย cheering on a friend like Ms. Taylor Swift and other times,ย itโsย jumping in with kindnessโespecially when our feeds need it most.
RK: Can you walk me through the process of creating social-first content likeย this Reel?ย It'sย obviously one thing to pull clips butย it'sย another to create videos specifically for use on social.ย
CV: My team at Sesame Workshop has the unique opportunity to create content that is social-first. This involves photo shoots, video shoots, static graphic development, and more!
When it comes to video content,ย itโsย a formal production process. My teammates and I brainstorm content all year-round, weย finalizeย our priority pieces, andย weย work with our colleagues in production to bring these social-first videos to life.ย Itโsย a fantastic feeling seeing our concepts on platforms and reading comments from fans.โฏ
RK: What'sย a recent postย you'reย particularly proud of? Talk to me about how it came together and why it worked!ย
CV: What makes me particularly proud is when Elmo helps folks feel seen and appreciated. This past March, Elmo posted โRamadan Mubarak to all of Elmo's friends! Elmo loves you!โ on Twitter/X, totaling more than 8 million impressions and 176K engagements. This is just one example of how Elmoโs content continues to grow in inclusivity and meaning and this growth is important to me and my team.โฏย
RK: What do you love about working in social media?ย
CV: โฏIn my eyes, social media is where it all happens! Where else can you find celebrities, world leaders, furry monsters, and your Auntย Joanneย all in the same place?ย Itโsย news, entertainment, and connection.ย It'sย a unique balance of permanent and fleeting.
Working in social media continues to challenge me to be my best creative self. I constantly need to tap into a growth mindset and just whenย I think Iย have something figured out,ย itโsย time to re-invent.ย Itโsย a special kind of storytelling that I hope to keep working on.โฏ
RK: Finally,ย what'sย the current relationship between Elmo and Rocco??ย
CV: โฏYouโllย have to keep your eyes on Elmoโs social channelsย to find out! ;)
