Listening now! You can totally age out and fifteen years in, I have—I think sadly most places/people don’t have the marketing budget to support senior/wise people, even if you can argue for their value. I just got too expensive, and rents due and so is marketplace health insurance, which I need at 40! I wish I’d thought about this more ten years ago or before getting into the industry at all, and I’ve been trying to warn my old mentees of this, too. I was lucky to kinda burn out in my mid 30s and go back to school— working hard on diversifying myself away from social.
Appreciate you sharing this! We didn't even get into the salary side of it all, but it's a great point. Worth exploring in a future conversation, for sure.
I hear “we love you so much and can’t afford you” a lot, and have figured out my hourly rate & salary cap… at a certain point you can’t monetize seniority anymore to the same degree. You have to become more of a generalist, I think—SO grateful for clients that have allowed me to do that!
I think sometimes the fear of aging out is worse than the reality - because the platform audiences are aging too, right? Especially on Meta platforms. I’m coming at this more from a creator perspective than a working-in-house for-a-brand perspective, but I think it also depends on the kind of content you make - there’s plenty of Instagram content that has very little to do with memes or youth culture.
Personally I think it’s less a case of ageing out, and more that your role evolves.
Helping with the professional development of your younger team, understanding that naturally they are now more likely than you to have their finger on the pulse of what’s new and what resonates, supporting what they want to do and being that person who, using your corporate experience, can sell it in to senior stakeholders, having the direct connection with different parts of the social platforms and building relationships with senior staff at those companies etc.
