salary transparency is SO IMPORTANT especially in an industry as new and varied as this. places i've looked at today are still only providing lower than baseline hourly pay for positions listed here for as high as $98k/year. it's ridiculous
Would be rad to know how respondents approached salary negotiations since (clearly in this data) many others could benefit from learning strategy and building confidence to engage in negotiations
I'd be curious to see the difference between in-house social media managers and agencies. I am a Social Strategy Lead at one of the biggest marketing agencies in Germany and my salary is nowhere near the average that came out on your numbers for that level. I think it has to do with the fact that (as you said) most of the people you surveyed live in places like LA and NYC where the cost of living is probably way higher in those places than it is here in Berlin. Still so interesting to see though! And we all know, agency work is always paid lower than in-house.
Thank you for taking the time to do this! Were they any respondents working in the fashion industry? Unless it’s grouped with beauty/selfcare, that would have been such a great category to have!
Okay! It's updated! "Fashion" or "Fashion/retail" have a median salary of $98,000, placing it just shy of the top three earning industries (Entertainment: $99,041.81 in #3).
Social media managers need to unionize at this point lmao
More on that in the next newsletter!!

That’s a very good catch! We have the data for it so let me pull it tomorrow. Will update the chart and comment here once it’s been added in.
