After 10 years, I applied to grad school and I’m pivoting to an entirely new career and industry. The work-life balance was awful and the toll it took on my mental health was far too high. I’ve kept an eye on job boards for something more flexible while I’m in school, and all I see are open positions for social media managers, content creators, and adjacent positions. There is such high turnover and many people are too disillusioned (I am one of them) and don’t want these jobs anymore. I am interested in the idea of unionizing, however. That might alleviate many of our collective problems!
What are you pivoting to? If you feel comfortable sharing. I'm not a social media manager but also at a point where I wonder if I need a pivot so always curious to hear stories from others.
Happy to share! I'm in my first year of grad school for clinical psychology to become an LMFT / LPCC. Oddly enough, I know a handful of people who worked in digital careers within fashion (e-comm, marketing, social, etc) who went on to become therapists. It's an interesting pipeline, and points to a much larger issue of just how dismissive and disrespectful these industries are of mental health.
Social media managers are often balancing the roles of strategist, graphic designer, influencer marketing manager, copywriter, etc. It's unrealistic and unmanageable, and unionizing would definitely help alleviate some of that. Not to mention these roles are usually the first on the chopping block when it comes to budget cuts, so it's just a volatile industry overall. I could talk about this forever and do a lot of research on this topic, but I'll get off my soapbox, haha. Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions!
That's really cool and I know of at least one person who left my company recently to study clinical psychology. Best of luck with your studies. We definitely need skilled therapist nowadays. And thanks for the DM offer. I will message you if I have more questions.
yeah not surprising
Thanks for the deep dive! Glad to see compensation surging, but that work-life balance… 😱
